Depart early in one of Pacuare’s 4WD SUVs for a scenic 1.5-hour drive through the Talamanca Mountains to Guayabo National Monument at the base of Turrialba Volcano. These 3,000-year-old ruins, once home to about 10,000 people, remain shrouded in mystery—were they abandoned due to disease, invasion, or other reasons?
