Day 2: Rafting into Pacuare Lodge
•You’ll be picked up early for the 2½-hour drive to the Pacuare River, with a stop for a traditional Costa Rican breakfast along the way. After an exciting 1- to 1½-hour whitewater rafting trip over class II-III rapids, you’ll arrive at the award winning Pacuare Lodge – your home for the next two nights. After lunch, your guide will take you on a short hike through the rainforest to a waterfall and swimming hole. In the evening, you’ll enjoy an exquisite dinner by candlelight.
Day 3: Exploring remote Costa Rica
•On this day you can choose from an array of optional tours that include rock climbing and rappelling on the Tropical Canyoning tour, or gliding through the treetops on ziplines on the Pacuare Canopy Adventure. Other options include guided hikes through the forest (from 1 to 6 hours), an introduction to the Cabécar Indigenous culture, a visit to a rural community, or a rejuvenation session at the lodge’s spa.
Day 4: Whitewater rafting on the Pacuare River before heading to Arenal Volcano
•After breakfast, you’ll depart by raft for a whitewater rafting adventure (approx. 3½ hours over class III-IV rapids) on the Pacuare River’s most scenic section. You’ll float through lush canyons past pristine rainforest, crystalline waterfalls, and an array of tropical birds. A deli-style lunch will be served on the riverbank along the way, and you can change into dry clothes after the river trip before you’re driven in a private minibus to the Arenal Volcano area (about 4 hours). Overnight Hotel Arenal Springs or similar.
Day 5: Explore Arenal Volcano and relax at thermal hot springs
•This day you’ll hike along the western slope of the impressive Arenal Volcano, where molten lava fields give way to lush tropical vegetation. You’ll then visit the Tabacón Hot Springs, where thermal waters flow through exuberant gardens, for a swim and a sumptuous dinner. Overnight Hotel Arenal Springs or similar.
Day 6: Lakes, mountains, cloud forests, and Monteverde
•After breakfast, you’ll travel to Monteverde on a magnificent route that takes you across Lake Arenal and up into the mountains on rural roads past lovely views and lush landscapes (3½ hours). You’ll reach Monteverde in time for a bit of exploration and a great sunset. Overnight Hotel El Establo or similar.
Day 7: The cloud forest as you’ve never imagined
•This day you’ll be picked up after breakfast for a tour that lets you experience the luxuriant cloud forest from various perspectives. First you’ll glide past the treetops on the Sky Tram gondolas; then you’ll fly across forested canyons on zip lines on the exhilarating Sky Trek; then you’ll contemplate the cloud forest flora and fauna in serenity on the Sky Walk tour, which takes you over a series of suspension bridges. Overnight Hotel El Establo or similar.
Day 8: Time to head home
•You’ll be picked up at your Monteverde hotel and driven along mountain roads back to the San José International Airport in time to check in for with your flight home.
