Day 3: Explore the rainforest, relax
The rainforest sings to you. At Lapa Rios, you will be in close contact with nature from the moment you awaken to the songs and squawks of birds until the moment you doze off to the soft chirping of tree frogs. The airy bungalows are cooled by ocean breezes, which often carry the aroma of jungle blossoms. The restaurant serves a tasty selection of tropical fruit drinks, and massages are given in a room with a rainforest view. It’s the perfect place to relax and unwind, but Lapa Rios also offers more than a dozen options for exploring the surrounding jungle and sea. Choose from various hikes in the hotel’s nature reserve or optional tours (not included in the price) including tours of the nearby Golfo Dulce, or horseback riding on a pristine beach, among other tours.
Days 4 and 5: At your leisure
Lapa Rios has more than enough options to keep you busy. We highly recommend taking an early morning bird watching tour, and you may want to hike deeper into the forest to a small waterfall. Other options include learning about local medicinal plants, eating lunch in the rainforest, checking out the tidal pools on nearby Matapalo Point, or exploring the forest at night.
Day 6: Awesome views and off-road adventure
After an early morning flight back to San José, our driver will meet you at the airport and take you toward Costa Rica’s Caribbean slope – passing through the cities of San José and Cartago and verdant farmland – to the jaw-dropping Pacuare River. Views of the mountains covered by dense jungle couldn’t be more dramatic! The adventure continues as you leave the four-wheel-drive vehicle and cross the river on a hanging gondola that carries you above the river via a 100-meter cable running from riverbank to riverbank. After approximately 2.5 hours on the road, you’ll reach the award winning secluded Pacuare Lodge, where you’ll settle into your spacious suite and enjoy a sumptuous lunch by the river. In the evening, it's candlelight, tree-frog serenades, and delectable dining at the Nairi Awari Restaurant.
Day 7: Indigenous culture, rainforest adventure, and relaxation
Awaken to a symphony of birdsong and enjoy breakfast from the privacy of your bungalow before embarking on this day’s adventures. You can take it easy, or begin enjoying some of the lodge’s optional tours which can take you deeper into the forest, or to the closest communities. Nature lovers may want to start before breakfast with a daybreak birdwatching tour. Outdoor adventure options include the Canopy Adventure Tour, which takes you gliding between treetop platforms on cables, or Canyoning- El Tesorito Creek , which combines hiking, rock climbing and rappelling. Hikers have several options to choose from: the Rural Experience , which visits the nearest community; the Cabécar Indian Tour, a more demanding hike to an isolated indigenous home deep in the forest; or the Ancient Trail and Hidden Waterfall Hike, which heads higher into the mountains to a waterfall, and takes most of the day. You’ll be back at the lodge in time for lunch, after which you can relax or get a massage before another delicious candlelight dinner.
Day 8: Choose your own adventure
This day offers another opportunity to enjoy an outdoor adventure or experience the local culture . It also gives you more time to soak up the peacefulness and natural beauty of a magical place. The lodge employs resident naturalist guides who will provide you with unique insights into the plant and animal world.
Day 9: Whitewater rafting on the Pacuare River
Departure between 9:00-10:00 am. In the morning you will depart by raft for an even more fun-filled day of whitewater rafting excitement. This journey will take you through class III–IV rapids, narrow canyons, and lush valleys. You’ll raft past waterfalls, virgin rainforest, and an array of wildlife. We’ll stop for a picnic lunch on the riverbank before descending the last stretch of the Pacuare’s remarkable scenery.
