Day 3: Drive to Monteverde
After breakfast, drive around four hours south to the town of Santa Elena, next to Monteverde, high in the Tilarán Mountain Range. Here you’ll enjoy luxuriant landscapes, wildlife, and breathtaking views of the Pacific lowlands and coast. Overnight at Poco a Poco Hotel (quetzal room) or similar.
Day 4: Explore Monteverde’s famous cloud forests
Rise early for your tour of the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve – an enchanting, exuberant refuge that is home to colorful birds such as toucans, motmots, quetzals, and an array of other wildlife. Your afternoon activity options (not included in package price) include a butterfly garden, horseback riding, a coffee tour, or a night walk through the forest. Overnight at Poco a Poco Hotel or similar.
Day 5: Drive to the Arenal Volcano area
This day you’ll drive around four hours out of the mountains and around vast Lake Arenal to the Arenal Volcano area, moving from the country’s relatively dry Pacific Slope to its more luxuriant Caribbean Slope. You’ll spend the next two nights at a hotel near massive Arenal Volcano – an impressive sight that is surrounded by lush rainforest, crystalline rivers, waterfalls, and hot springs. Overnight at Arenal Springs Hotel (Junior Suite) or similar.
Day 6: Explore the Hanging Bridges of Arenal
After breakfast, you’ll be picked up for the Arenal Hanging Bridges tour, where you’ll experience the rainforest from varied perspectives – from the ground (like a jaguar), from the canopy (like a monkey), and from above (like an eagle). You’ll hike along a three-kilometer trail that includes 15 bridges and learn about some of the forest’s varied plants and animals. Overnight at Arenal Springs Hotel or similar.
Day 7: Drive to Siquirres and return your vehicle
This morning you’ll drive approx. 4 hours to the Pacuare Lodge operations center in Siquirres, where you’ll turn in your vehicle and be driven to the award-winning Pacuare Lodge. You’ll have time for a hike through the rainforest while you savor the natural beauty and tranquility of this remote spot. You’ll then enjoy an exquisite dinner by candlelight. Overnight at Pacuare Lodge (river suite).
Day 8: Explore the area around Pacuare Lodge
On this day, you can explore this wild area on such exciting tours (not included in package price) as guided rainforest hikes, the Pacuare Canopy Adventure, Tropical Canyoning, visit a rural community or the Cabécar Indian palapa, or simply indulge in some rejuvenation at the lodge’s spa. Overnight at Pacuare Lodge.
Day 9: Whitewater rafting on the Pacuare River
After breakfast, you’ll depart by raft for a fun-filled day of whitewater rafting (approximately 3½ hours over class III-IV rapids) that will take you past waterfalls and gorgeous jungle scenery. You’ll enjoy a deli-style lunch on the riverbank and can change into dry clothing after the river trip, before you’re driven to San José. Overnight at the Park Inn by Radisson (standard room) or similar.
Day 10: Head to Tamarindo Beach
You’ll be driven from San José to the beach town of Tamarindo, on the Northern Pacific Coast, winding your way down out of the mountains and crossing the ranchland of Guanacaste Province. Overnight at Tamarindo Diriá Beach Resort (sunset ocean view room) or similar.
Days 11-14: Sun, sand, and surf at your leisure
Enjoy four days at this popular palm-lined beach where you can enjoy the sun, sand, sea, and pool and take advantage of the varied activities available (not included in package price) which include surfing, golf, or day trips to other beaches or national parks. Overnights at Tamarindo Diria Beach Resort or similar.
Day 15: Back to the airport
You’ll be picked up and driven to the airport in time to check in for your international flight.
