Day 2: Adventure in the Treetops and Relaxation
Getting up early has never been so pleasant: you’ll awake to birdsong and the soothing sound of the river. Head over to Nairi Awari restaurant for a hearty breakfast, because you’ll need your energy for the Pacuare Lodge Canopy Adventure. There, you’ll enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the rainforest canopy. The canopy is actually the most active part of the rainforest: it’s an elevated ecosystem of bromeliads, orchids and other flowering plants growing on the branches of massive tropical trees. You’ll see all this up close and personal while sliding along cables from tree to tree. Your trip ends at The Nest, a platform 20 meters (66 feet) high in a treetop, where your family will enjoy a delicious lunch in a uniquely splendid setting high in the branches of a Ceiba: a tree that is sacred to the ancient Mayas.
The afternoon is open for a visit to our Jawa Juu Spa or simply relax in your private suite. Once the sun sets, you’ll enjoy a candlelit dinner at Nairi Awari Restaurant.
Day 3: Costa Rican Culture
Today you’ll have the option of a visit to a traditional Cabécar rancho (a thatched house) or hike to the village of Bajo del Tigre. Since time immemorial, the Cabécar Indians – Costa Rica’s largest tribe – have lived in harmony with the rainforest in the mountains near the Pacuare River. We have helped members of a clan that live in the nearby Nairi Awari Indigenous Reserve to build a traditional Cabécar rancho a short hike from the lodge. There the son of a local shaman will teach you about his people’s culture and customs. Breakfast will be served at the rancho, where your family will have the opportunity to experience this ancient culture and have fun doing traditional crafts with one of the Cabécar members.
The second option is a 1.5-hour hike to the village where most of our employees are from. Guided by a naturalist guide, you and your family will explore the river basin and rainforest, as well as visit the community of Bajo del Tigre, a small hamlet of farmers who grow spices, roots, tubers, cilantro, and more. You’ll visit a local family at their home where you can sample a traditional Costa Rican snack, such as “picadillo,” while seeing how they live. Your children will have the opportunity to visit the community’s one-room schoolhouse (during weekdays) where one energetic teacher teaches all grades. Following that, you head back on a trail that winds its way down to the Pacuare Lodge.
In the afternoon, you are free to relax or options include the Canyoning El Tesorito Creek , which combines hiking, rock climbing and rappelling.
Make the day even more special: surprise your family with a magical dinner by the riverbank. We’ll set up an elegant, private table for you near the river’s edge, lit by a fire pit and candles and surrounded by nature. You can savor an exquisite meal under the stars, with a small fire crackling nearby and the soothing sounds of flowing water and tree frog chirps.
Day 4: The Heart of the Pacuare River
After a hearty breakfast, you’re off for more exciting adventures in nature. You’ll depart between 9:00-10:00 am by raft for a day of whitewater rafting that is even more exhilarating than the first day (approximately 3.5 hours over class III-IV rapids). This option is available only for children 12 years and up. Children ages 7 to 11 will leave the lodge with the parents via a 4WD vehicle.
This stretch of the Pacuare River flows through canyons and past waterfalls and virgin rainforest. You’re likely to catch glimpses of varied birds and other wildlife during the quiet stretches. A deli-style lunch will be served on the riverbank en route, and you’ll have a chance to change into dry clothes at our private facilities by the river take-out before the drive back to your hotel in our minibus. You can expect to arrive back in San José between 6-6:30 pm.
